1. International Labor Day: Rallies & protests around the worldMay 1, 2014
Jakarta

Thousands of protesters are expected to march through the streets of the Indonesian capital. Among those expected to demonstrate are women who earned $1 an hour making Adidas shoes, until they were fired for speaking out.

Moscow
Russian workers will march on Moscow’s Red Square for the first time since 1991. The celebrations, which have been relegated to a Moscow highway for the past 23 years, were traditionally elaborate affairs celebrating Russia’s military might and the Bolshevik revolution. According to Russia Today, the Crimea flag will be on show during the parade.

New York
A number of Occupy Wall Street protests are planned and the movement will be joined by Occupy Sandy activists, who are protesting in support of low income communities affected by hurricane Sandy, which struck in 2012.

Istanbul
The Turkish prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has told unions not to stage rallies in Taksim Square, the site of clashes between protesters and police last year, leading Amnesty to call on him to reverse the ban.

Caracas

The Venezuelan capital will witness three “workers’ rallies” after the country’s president, Nicolás Maduro, called for the action at a meeting with union leaders in Caracas earlier this week. Maduro also announced a 30% increase in the minimum wage and pensions to counter inflation, which has risen to nearly 60%. Rival street protests are expected against Hugo Chávez’s successor.

London

A May Day rally will commemorate rail union leader Bob Crow and MP and campaigner Tony Benn, who both died earlier this year. The Occupy movement is expected to protest against payday loan companies.
